Our adventure was a blend of old and new, as we explored cities, museums, and natural landscapes. We journeyed from deserts to mountains, experiencing both warm and cold climates. Each location we visited manifested concepts and values centered around peacemaking and coexistence. Travelling and meeting people from different cultures, religions, and languages profoundly alters your worldview. This was the lesson we embraced during our five-day journey in Muscat.
Our journey in Muscat was a testament to the power of travel in fostering understanding and promoting peace. Each step taken and each person met added a new layer to our appreciation of coexistence and the universal desire for harmony.
The initial step was an immersion into the rich and vibrant traditional Omani culture, which encompasses a variety of unique practices and crafts. We delved into the intricate world of Omani handcrafts, marveling at the skill and dedication required to create each piece. Boat building, an age-old tradition in Oman, showcased the ingenuity and craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations. The exploration of Omani dishes and cuisine was a feast for the senses, revealing a culinary heritage rich in flavors and history.
The warm welcome we received from the Omanis was heartwarming and genuine, making us feel like part of their community.
One of the most profound aspects of Omani culture that we experienced was the deep-rooted value of hospitality. This was evident in the distinctive ways of eating that we observed, where meals are not just about the food but about the experience of coming together. Sharing a meal in Oman is a cultural ritual that goes beyond mere sustenance. It is a communal activity that fosters connection and understanding. Sitting together around a table, we learned from each other, exchanging stories and insights despite our differences. This act of sharing a meal becomes a powerful symbol of unity and learning, breaking down barriers that might otherwise separate us.
The next phase of our journey involved uncovering the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to preserving sea turtle life, a cause that holds significant ecological and cultural value in the region. One of the most striking examples of this dedication is found in Ras al-Hadd, home to an entire museum devoted to the conservation of sea turtles. This museum serves as both an educational center and a testament to the importance of protecting these ancient mariners.
Our visit to Ras al-Hadd offered a unique and deeply moving experience: witnessing the hatching of baby turtles. Observing these tiny creatures emerge from their nests and instinctively make their way to the sea, guided by the gentle glow of the moonlight, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. This natural spectacle provided a profound lesson in resilience and adaptation, as these vulnerable hatchlings embarked on their perilous journey towards the ocean, overcoming numerous obstacles along the way.
Through this experience, we gained a deeper insight into the significance of conservation work and the resilience of nature. It reinforced the idea that, with concerted effort and dedication, we can make a tangible difference in preserving the planet’s biodiversity for future generations.
The third step of our journey took us deep into the serene and expansive Sharqiyah Sands, where we found ourselves surrounded by beautiful, calm, and undulating dunes. This part of our adventure was a harmonious blend of appreciating Nature’s splendor, experiencing profound stillness, and fostering collaboration among our group.
As we ventured into the dunes, we were treated to the breathtaking spectacle of the sundown. Watching the sun descend, it seemed to move in perfect harmony with the sands, creating a scene vastly different from the sunsets we witness in urban settings. The interplay of light and shadow over the dunes was mesmerizing, a true testament to Nature’s beauty.
Beyond the visual feast, our journey also served as a valuable lesson in teamwork and coexistence. Through various collaborative games, we learned that effective communication and mutual understanding are crucial for success. These activities were not just about winning but about learning to work together seamlessly. One of the most profound insights we gained was the realization that the well-being of a team, working in harmony, is a victory in itself. This experience underscored the importance of unity and collective effort, enriching our journey both individually and as a group.
The final leg of our journey took us to Jebal el Akhdhar, a destination that stood in stark contrast to the other places we had visited. This mountain, with its towering height and lush greenery, offered a refreshing change from the arid dunes of the Sharqiyah Sands. The cool climate provided a welcome respite, enveloping us in a crisp, invigorating atmosphere.
Our time at Jebal el Akhdhar was marked by a challenging yet rewarding hike, where we once again relied on our teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. Armed with a map, we set out to navigate the mountain trails, working together to reach our destination. The hike was more than just a physical endeavor; it was a test of our collective ability to strategize, adapt, and support one another.
As we ascended the mountain, the lush greenery surrounding us was a constant reminder of Nature’s diversity and beauty. The experience of hiking through such a vibrant landscape was both humbling and exhilarating. Each step brought new sights and sounds, deepening our appreciation for the natural world.
Throughout the hike, we encountered various obstacles that required us to draw on our collaborative strengths. We communicated effectively to navigate tricky paths, provided encouragement to those who needed it, and made decisions as a cohesive unit. This journey up Jebal el Akhdhar not only highlighted the importance of individual contributions but also reinforced the power of working together towards a common goal.
At the end of the program, we participated in the Youth, Religious and Mediation Course, we learned about diverse backgrounds and worldviews, the essential values to uphold, and the mediation process itself. These steps, taught in the course, we have already grasped them indirectly within our journey in Oman.
